Digital Radiography

Digital radiography is one of the newest forms of radiographic testing. Since no film is required, images can be digitally enhanced for increased detail and are easily archived.

Digital radiography is very effective in its ability to detect flaws such as gas pores, inclusions and shrinkage very quickly. Images can be viewed immediately on a high-resolution monitor or sent directly to a customer for disposition.

ITCL carry out two of forms of digital radiographic imaging:

Computed Radiography (CR) - digital imaging process that uses a special imaging plate which employs storage phosphors.

Direct Radiography (DR)- a form of real-time radiography that uses a special flat panel detector.

ITCL employ both of the above digital radiographic systems to provide the following radiographic services:

  • Thickness profiles in piping systems, both insulated and uninsulated
  • Castings of aircraft and vehicle parts using computed radiography
  • Large production runs of smaller parts and butt welds would be inspected using direct radiography.

Utilising digital radiography can save time however the impact on the environment is also reduced as the use of film and chemicals is eliminated. The cost and volume of storage archives required for film can be reduced significantly by the electronic data storage of the digital images.
